The Process of Becoming a Driving Instructor in Australia

Becoming a driving instructor can be a great career choice in Australia; individuals emigrating from countries that drive on the right side of the road may need refresher courses in order to drive safely on the left side, once they begin living in the country. Some families may also prefer to send their teens to a private driving school in order to ensure they're as safe as possible when behind the wheel.

Whatever your reasons for considering a career as a driving instructor in Australia, note that the process is governed by the Department of Transportation, and they have certain requirements before someone can be certified as a driving instructor. Consider certain steps in the process so you know that you're prepared and will have a good outcome with your application.

Police and background check

You need to complete a police check in order to qualify to become a driving instructor. This is to check your own driving and criminal history; obviously someone with a long history of traffic citations should not be teaching others how to drive! You also typically need to provide two character references from persons who are not related to you as part of this police and background check.

Theory assessment

A theory assessment simply means a written test. It's vital that you understand the actual rules of the road in order to instruct others, and this test covers such subjects as speed limits, right of way in given situations, safe stopping distances and other such information. If you're not sure of all the detailed laws about driving, you may need to take a refresher course yourself so you can pass this theory assessment part of the requirements to become a driving instructor.

Medical check-up

There is a form you'll be given that will need to be filled out by your medical professional when you apply to be an instructor to ensure that you're in good health. Be prepared for this appointment with your doctor, as it's not scheduled or paid for by the Department of Transportation!

Driving test

Of course, there is a driving test or assessment needed as part of your application to be a driving instructor; however, if you possess certain commercial driver's licences, you may not be required to take this test. If you have a commercial license of any sort, ask your representative at the Department of Transportation if you're exempt so you can skip this portion of the process and get your instructor's certificate.
